It’s the world’s oldest member-owned co-operative with an enviable reputation, and the best wines at The Wine Society continue to represent excellent value, adventure, high quality, or a combination of all three. The name might sound old-fashioned and a little conservative but Wine Society members, who now number 183,000, are loyal and adventurous. The biannual press tastings are considered by critics as essential events in the industry calendar and are a great way of building an impression of the best wines at The Wine Society, as well as the overall character of the range and how it’s evolving.

The Society usually offers between 1,600 and 1,800 wines, however there are currently more than 2,000 available on the website, with something to suit almost all tastes and budgets. Earlier in 2025, wines from Syria and Ukraine were added to the line-up and a Chenin Blanc from South Africa proved the perfect partner to summer. I have been a member for more than 25 years, attended the Society’s press tastings for the best part of a decade and now, having been given a snapshot of the range in the run up to Christmas, believe that the overall offering is the best it has ever been.

Rising prices are currently the talking point in the wine industry, courtesy of tax rises and inflation, but The Wine Society’s unusual ownership structure has allowed it to at least keep a lid on prices and sales are up 2% in a challenging market.

Upholding the Society’s reputation for unearthing interesting, well priced gems, the current range includes several esoteric styles, including the first bespoke Jura white, an enchanting pair of Turkish wines from near-extinct grape varieties, and a new own-label Cap Classique traditional method sparkling wine at a price point that will surely make it a festive bestseller.

On top of freezing costs, The Wine Society’s buying team are committed to sustainability, having managed to bring down the average bottle weight of their stock and fund supplier initiatives that promote soil health and regenerative viticulture. With this in mind, you can shop safely in the knowledge that you are buying from a forward-thinking organisation committed to sustainability, in addition to receiving all the advantages of good value, quality wine.
