Lidl’s wine range is reliable and occasionally surprising, with the best Lidl wines representative of some astute buying and astonishing value. Whatever your interpretation of ‘good value’ may be, there’s no denying that the ‘discounter’ supermarkets have established a niche for unmissable deals.
It’s always tricky to evaluate Lidl’s wine range using the same criteria as more traditional supermarkets. That’s because Lidl doesn’t operate a fixed core range in the same way – instead, it rotates a selection of temporary parcels, themed promotions, and “when it’s gone, it’s gone” lines. As such, each tasting offers more of a snapshot than a comprehensive picture of its offering. Nonetheless, these tastings remain an interesting insight into what Lidl is prioritising at any given time — and how well their buyers are balancing value with drinkability.
This summer’s selection was generally solid, with fewer true standout gems than we found in 2024. That said, the best Lidl wines still represent genuinely good value, particularly when you consider their pricing. Many of the white and rosé wines showed particularly well – fresh, clean, and reliable in character – while the cheaper reds were more variable, with only a few being remarkable for good reasons. Some of the wines in the Deluxe range performed very well, although others felt like they were trying too hard.

A definite highlight was the Deluxe Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, which impressed with depth, structure, and varietal clarity – a serious wine at a very modest price point. The Champagne at £13.99 is also worth flagging: it may not be the most refined fizz around, but it’s hard to argue with the value proposition. More broadly, the tasting supported the view that Lidl continues to punch above its weight in some categories, particularly in aromatic whites, Southern French rosés, and a few well-judged entries from Australia and Italy.
Ultimately, if you’re looking for everyday wines that deliver flavour and balance without a hefty price tag, there are a number of decent options here. Seek out the top scorers for the best return on your spend — and if you’re planning a summer barbecue or casual dinner, there are some well-suited choices, particularly in the £6–£9 bracket.

What are the IWSC Drinks Supermarket of the Year Awards?
The IWSC Drinks Supermarket of the Year Awards were introduced to provide consumers with an in-depth evaluation of supermarkets’ alcoholic beverage offerings, inclusive of non-alcoholic alternatives. A panel of judges spend months evaluating the biggest UK retailers. Attending supermarket tastings forms part of this process, offering judges the chance to taste many of the wines available in-store and see how buyers are responding to trends and consumer demand.
