The quality of Morrisons’ current wine range is generally very good, with the whites representing many of the best Morrisons wines. Although technically no longer one of ‘the big four’ supermarkets in the UK (it was recently overtaken by Aldi in terms of market share), Morrisons has a wine offering similar to that of its traditional, bigger rivals, rather than the discounters.
As with Tesco and its Finest range, Morrisons places heavy emphasis on its own-label wines, in this case labeled ‘The Best’. Morrisons has always been a bit different, owning its own farms, abattoirs and even a fishing vessel. It is yet to add a winery to its property portfolio, however, which is a shame.
Avoid the lower ABV wines, however, and there is drinking pleasure to be found in the range
While the whites are some of the most eye-catching wines in the Morrisons lineup, there is also a focus within the current range on lower ABV wines. One could argue that Morrisons is moving with the times, as consumers reduce their alcohol intake, but the stark reality is that its buyers are trying to keep prices as low as possible following last summer’s changes to alcohol duty made by the UK Government. While applauding the innovation and the effort to keep wine affordable for customers as many continue to feel the effects of rising prices, sadly most of the lower ABV wines are disappointing, tasting torpid and hollow. There’s clearly work to be done in maintaining their drinking appeal while lowering the alcohol content because a cheap wine is not automatically good value. None of these wines can be recommended in their current form, regardless of their prices.
Avoid the lower ABV wines, however, and there is drinking pleasure to be found in the range. Fans of Italian white wines should be especially enthused by what awaits them. Read on for nine of the best Morrisons wines currently available.
What are the IWSC Drinks Supermarket of the Year Awards?
The IWSC Drinks Supermarket of the Year Awards were introduced to provide consumers with an in-depth evaluation of supermarkets’ alcoholic beverage offerings, inclusive of non-alcoholic alternatives. A panel of judges spend months evaluating the biggest UK retailers. Attending supermarket tastings forms part of this process, offering judges the chance to taste many of the wines available in-store and see how buyers are responding to trends and consumer demand.
