It’s the world’s oldest member-owned co-operative with a great reputation, and the best wines at The Wine Society continue to represent excellent value, adventure, high quality or a combination of all three. Though the company’s name might sound a little stuffy, its 181,000 members are loyal and intrepid, while its biannual press tastings are considered an absolute must by the critics. So, what are the best wines at The Wine Society in 2025?
The Society’s range of 1,650 wines is constantly refreshed, with new additions as well as the latest vintages of returning favourites. Recent bottles new to the range cover 17 countries, with both Syria and Ukraine making their debuts. Of the many wines on show at the spring/summer tasting, it was an excellent show for the whites, with a South African Chenin Blanc a particular highlight.
The Wine Society’s unusual ownership structure has allowed it to hold the prices of many wines but what’s most impressive is the sheer diversity of the range
At a time of rising prices, courtesy of duty increases and inflation, The Wine Society’s unusual ownership structure has allowed it to hold the prices of many wines but what’s most impressive is the sheer diversity of the range. Upholding their reputation for unearthing interesting, reasonably price gems, this year’s range includes a number of esoteric styles, with Gemischter Satz and Monterrei featuring on our top list. For the more traditionally minded, The Society’s own Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is big hit, as is the English blanc de blancs, both from the Exhibition range.
On top of freezing costs, The Wine Society’s buying team are committed to sustainability, having managed to bring down the average bottle weight of their stock to 439 grammes while funding supplier initiatives that promote soil health and regenerative viticulture. With this in mind, you can shop safely in the knowledge that you are buying from a forward-thinking organisation committed to sustainability, whose range represents excellent value.
