Chinon is perfect for summer and produced from Cabernet Franc, a variety that I call the ‘Mr Benn of red grapes’ for its ability to adopt starkly different profiles according to where it’s planted. The Loire is its home and the place it shines brightest, and this well made example from Bougrier is berry-charged, crunchy and sappy with just the right amount of leafy freshness. Give this wine half and hour in the fridge to enhance its natural sense of freshness and serve it with a soft goat’s cheese and watermelon salad.
