Santa Rita is one of the most emblematic and recognised producers in Chile. Founded in 1880, the winery is situated in the Maipo Valley in Alto Jahuel at the foothills of the Andes, and over the past 30 years, its flagship Casa Real wine has played a pivotal role in setting the benchmark for what premium wine from Chile can be.

A 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from an 18.5ha plot on the property, Casa Real has often been labelled Chile’s first icon wine. The Casa Real estate was purchased in 1980 by businessman Ricardo Claro, who invested heavily in vineyard holdings and had ambitious and lofty expectations for its wines. In 1985, he conceived the idea for Casa Real, which saw its first official release in 1989. Claro was wedded to the idea of a wine produced from vines on the estate and made from purely Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which he viewed as Chile and Santa Rita’s finest variety.

The wine has been made in every vintage bar four (1992, 2000, 2006 and 2016), when the quality was not deemed suitable. There have been just three winemakers to date: Ignacio Recabarren, Cecilia Torres and current winemaker Sebastián Labbé, who took the helm in early 2017. I asked Labbé how he would best explain the style of Casa Real. ‘We have a special place here,’ he tells me, ‘and we also have four different massal selections of Cabernet Sauvignon planted on their own rootstock. They all bring something different to the blend. These selections have small berries, small bunches and thick skins. We get very fine-grained tannins, and they have a structure that allows the wine to age well. We also get some wonderfully fragrant red-fruit character from Cabernet here, which I love.’

There has been serious investment in replanting and expanding the vineyard area at Santa Rita over the past decade, with the estate adding a further 20ha dedicated to Casa Real. But has the winemaking process shifted under Labbé’s steer? ‘I am very respectful of the origins and style of Casa Real and do not want to change that,’ he says. ‘There has been some fine-tuning: we now use around 75% new French oak versus 100% before. We have also made changes with berry selection, using an optical sorter now, which gives us greater control. I want to look for infusion rather than extraction, and to be a little gentler on that front.’

What was clear during a tasting of 11 vintages conducted at the estate was that these are wines with very good ageing potential. We tasted an unofficial first vintage of Casa Real, the 1986, that was never commercially released under the label. It was remarkably alive and fresh for a wine of that age. The latest release, the 2020, demonstrated the subtle changes in winemaking; it clearly has excellent ageing potential but, even at such a young age, was approachable and enjoyable. While Chilean wines might not be renowned for their longevity and ageability, Casa Real seems to have the structure and concentration to do so gracefully.

A move to sell the wines on La Place de Bordeaux was announced in 2021, and last year the 2019 was successfully released, marking 30 years of Casa Real. ‘This was something that Ricardo Claro dreamed of,’ says Santa Rita chairman Baltazar Sánchez; ‘for Casa Real to be considered one of the great wines and to be available to wine lovers all over the world.’
