In the latest episode of The Drinking Hour David Kermode meets with Eric Heerema of Nyetimber to discuss his journey into owning a wine estate, the rising prowess of Nyetimber, and his recent venture, The Lakes Distillery.

A champion for England’s alcoholic drinks offering, Eric Heerema purchased Nytimber nearly two decades ago – an historic estate that even featured in the Domesday Book. Fast forward to 2006 and it was already considered one of the top estates in England, an accolade which Heerema wanted to build upon during his tenure.

Enlisting the expertise of winemaker husband-and-wife Cherie Spriggs and Brad Geatrix, the team have continued to build on the estate’s reputation, creating a traditional method sparkling wine that adopts champagne varietals. 19 years later and Spriggs, Geatrix and Heerema still continue to work together, having created numerous new expressions and cuvées, to include the estate’s most prestigious 1086.

Kermode also speaks with Hereema in length about the single-malt distillery in the Lake District that he recently purchased. The pair discuss the synergy between Nyetimber and The Lakes Distillery, as well as Heerema’s plans to engage both the UK and international market.
