In a relatively short span of time, change has come quick to the world of no and low alcohol. These days, expectations among drinkers are much higher when it comes to the flavour of the alcohol-free wine or spirit in a glass – and why shouldn’t they be? In episode 290 of The Drinking Hour podcast, host David Kermode turns his gaze to the changing face of zero alcohol and speaks to three experts on the subject: Christian Nett, a fifth-generation winemaker at Weingut Bergdolt-Reif & Nett and an alcohol-free wine specialist; Claudia Geyer, co-founder of Solos Technology, which has developed a patented aroma recovery technology deployed in the making of zero-alcohol wine and spirits; and Irem Eren, a global expert in the no and low field.

The group discuss the vital role of aroma in any quality drink, regardless of its abv; the challenges of creating zero-alcohol beverages, particularly when it comes to winemaking; and the increasingly sophisticated techniques and technologies used to remove alcohol while retaining that all-important signature scent. As Erem puts it, ‘We are moving away from not only removing the alcohol but also how we can preserve the [drink’s] identity.’
