In episode 173 of The Drinking Hour podcast, David Kermode celebrates the 50th anniversary of J. Lohr, one of the most influential producers in California’s Paso Robles, with Steve Lohr, son of founder Jerry Lohr and current president and CEO at the winery.

They discuss how, in the 1970s, Jerry Lohr went from building houses in Silicon Valley to planting vines in Monterey County. Lohr also explains the unique status of Paso Robles in Californian wine, the region most closely associated with the Lohr brand, covering the geographical features that make Paso Robles ‘California’s best kept secret’.

Later in the episode, Kermode asks about the popular varieties within Paso Robles and whether the old adage of ‘Cabernet Sauvignon is king’ still holds true today. Lohr also explains that thanks to the terroir of Paso Robles, wine producers are able to grow both Bordeaux and Rhone varieties, something not common in other regions.

Kermode and Lohr wrap up the episode by discussing the plans for J. Lohr’s 50th anniversary and Lohr gives a comprehensive answer on his desert island wine.
