Three of the year’s top 10 wines are from France, making the country one of the best performers at the IWSC 2024. It was the Champagne region that stole the show, with the very highest scoring wine on this list a non-vintage sparkling Rosé that received an impressive 98 points. South Africa also had a strong showing in this year’s competition; both the country’s red and white wines were a hit with judges.

While the more renowned areas of France, Spain and Australia have a significant presence in this list, lesser known regions in Greece, Hungary and China also deserve their spaces, earning recognition from expert judges.

The wines in this top 40 all picked up a gold medal from the IWSC 2024, with judging carried out during spring and summer. To decide on which wines were worthy of a gold, judges blind-tasted their way through styles from across hundreds of regions before scoring each wine out of 100; to achieve an gold medal, wines had to score 95 points or more.

Most importantly, our IWSC wine judges are experts in their field, who work across all sectors of the wine industry. For evidence, see our full list of judges.

HOW DO WE SCORE THESE WINES?

Only the best wines sampled receive a Gold or Silver award. For example, to win Gold, wines have to score between 95 and 100 points. Meanwhile, Silver wines range from 90 to 94 points. Click here to read more on our scoring system.
