Never before in the Report has Champagne’s summit felt quite this high. Louis Roederer Cristal 2013 in magnum achieved a perfect 100 points, a dazzling symbol of the region’s potential. No fewer than 24 cuvées broke the 96-point barrier this year, underscoring the abundance of world-class vintages currently gracing the market.

The standout performer of the year, however, was unmistakably Dom Pérignon. I tasted eight releases (including a few still awaiting their market debuts next year) and both the 2006 and 2008 Plénitude 2 were nothing short of spectacular, each commanding 99 points. Yet, particularly impressive were the showings from the challenging 2010 and 2017 vintages, where Dom Pérignon’s peerless sourcing and masterful selection came brilliantly into play.

Today, the potential Dom Pérignon vineyard spans nearly 900 hectares across 14 of Champagne’s 17 Grand Cru villages and 15 of its 44 Premier Crus, a formidable palette of terroirs that fuels its consistency at the very top. Both 2010 and 2017 were races against the rain, yet the house managed to defy the odds: the 2010 yielded an exceptional rosé, a rare triumph in a rot-troubled year, while the 2017 marked Richard Geoffroy’s final creation as chef de cave – a fitting swan song and the smallest release in Dom Pérignon’s history. The 2018 harvest ushered in a new era under Vincent Chaperon, whose debut blend already impresses with its impeccable harmony and build-to-last structure. But having glimpsed what is to come, this is only the beginning. With Chaperon’s visionary hand at the helm, Dom Pérignon looks poised to redefine itself once again, a transformation worth following.

On the subject of masterful blending, I must highlight a rare treat: the second release of Charles Heidsieck’s Champagne Charlie, an impressive wine built on the finesse of the 2019 harvest, enriched with reserve wines from 2009 and 1996. By contrast, single-vineyard Champagnes celebrate singularity and a profound sense of place. Yet this approach is hardly a grower-only phenomenon – after all, Philipponnat’s Clos des Goisses pioneered the category as early as the 1930s. Under the careful stewardship of Charles Philipponnat, both the 2014 and 2016 Clos des Goisses surpassed expectations in my tastings, demonstrating just how expressive and age-worthy a single-vineyard Champagne can be.

Dom Ruinart excelled in the blanc de blancs category with its exquisitely refined 2013 vintage, a luminous Champagne that stands as a fitting tribute to chef de cave Frédéric Panaïotis, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Henriot, too, impressed with the sixth release of its remarkable Cuvée 38, a long-aged perpetual blend initiated in 1990; this latest edition representing its finest yet. Still the most striking over-performer came from Palmer & Co, whose Blanc de Blancs 2013 in magnum delivered a performance that rivals prestige cuvées while proudly representing the vintage category. I’m particularly delighted to see Palmer reinstating the vintage designation on the label of its iconic cuvée, a decision that honours transparency and enhances collectability.

The fast-rising blanc de noirs category is flourishing, with an ever-growing array of exceptional single-vineyard Champagnes redefining its style and scope. Leading the charge in this Report is Billecart-Salmon’s Clos Saint-Hilaire 2009, a wine of majestic depth, born from the old family garden in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Also deserving special mention is Jacquesson’s Dizy Terres Rouges 2014, only the second blanc de noirs vintage from this storied plot, once dedicated to producing a deeply hued rosé. In its new incarnation, it captures elevated finesse while retaining the powerful, expressive soul.

Indeed, the 2014 vintage continues to prove its worth, defying the challenges of its growing season. A shining example is the Cristal Rosé 2014; juicy, airy and delicately saline, a wine that perfectly encapsulates the year’s quiet triumph. Another standout in the rosé category is Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque Rosé 2012 in magnum, radiating refinement, character and longevity.

Among the vintage releases, the Pol Roger Rosé 2018 stole the spotlight with its lush charm and vibrancy, a joyful expression from a widely celebrated harvest. In the non-vintage field, Gosset’s limited-edition Suzanne Gosset Rosé brings something refreshingly different: a silky, voluptuous style elevated by its unusually generous 11g/l dosage. Its only shortcoming lies in presentation; the clear glass bottle leaves it vulnerable to light strike, a risk unworthy of such an otherwise captivating Champagne.

Yet this was only the tip of the iceberg. Champagne in 2025 is bursting with wines that reward curiosity – a thrilling blend of resilience, reinvention and pure brilliance.
