The waterways of the Finger Lakes are key to the success of the wines, according to producers in the area

New York State is an unexpected place to find good wine. As producer Kelby Russell says in this podcast episode, when people think of making wine in New York, they’re thinking of making wine on top of skyscrapers. The reality couldn’t be further from this image – in fact, the Finger Lakes are closer to Canada than they are New York City. The cool climate and beautiful vistas are a far cry from Manhattan, and the rural waterways make for fresh wines to get very excited about.

The Drinking Hour podcast host David Kermode speaks with the winemakers at the forefront of this up-and-coming wine region, including Russell from Red Newt Cellars, a winery based near Seneca Lake (the deepest of the Finger Lakes) that has a legacy of setting trends – from its single-vineyard wines to its approach to farm-to-table dining.
