In episode 187 of The Drinking Hour, David Kermode explores the award-winning wines of South Africa. Joining him on this journey are John Hoskins MW and Rebecca Palmer, both of whom were in the country earlier this year as judges at the IWSC’s in-situ judging event.
To start, Hoskins discusses the striking consistency of the wines tasted and highlights how many of the top wines had a balance of the best of old and new world. Palmer elaborates on the ‘structural precision’ of the wines tasted.
Next on the agenda, the trio discuss Cap Classique, South Africa’s sparkling wine that has become increasingly popular in recent years. Both judges were surprised at the high quality within the style, with Palmer underlining the complexity and versatility of the wines. The trio also debates the merits of South African Chenin Blanc, comparing it to examples from the Loire, before examining some of the difficulties faced by makers of Cabernet Sauvignon wines in South Africa. Finally, Hoskins and Palmer offer their advice to South African winemakers, discussing areas of focus and the trajectory of the country’s wine styles.
To end the episode, Kermode is joined by The Whisky Exchange‘s Billy Abbott for the next mini masterclass in whisky. This week, Abbott tackles the subject of new world whisky and takes a look at some of the regional styles of whisky from around the globe, including specific flavour profiles found in Korean, Indian and American whisky.
