Episode 186 of the Drinking Hour podcast sees host David Kermode joined by drinks journalist, author and Club Oenologique contributor Alice Lascelles to talk about her new book, The Martini.
Lascelles explains why she wanted to focus on the Martini, diving into the history of the drink and giving her rules when it comes to mastering the cocktail, including her top tip for success. She covers some of her favourite recipes in the book, including the Flame of Love, first created at Chasen’s in Hollywood for Dean Martin.
As with any conversation about the Martini, Kermode and Lascelles debate vodka vs gin, with Lascelles offering her opinion on the best gins to use. Finally, Kermode puts Lascelles on the spot and asks for her favourite version of the cocktail.
Later in the episode, Billy Abbott returns for a mini masterclass on Japanese whiskey. Abbott covers the differences between Japanese, Scottish and Irish whisky, before explaining the different regional styles found across Japan.
