White wine
Peter Michael Winery, Ma Belle-Fille 2015
Yellow-gold in colour, this smells of pineapple and white tropical flowers. Flavours of grapefruit pith, still bright with acidity, wrap around a core of candied lemon, lemon curd and a touch of toasted hazelnuts. There’s a distinct mineral core that commands attention, highlighted by very good acidity and a lovely satin texture. Excellent, with a lengthy finish. A very dry winter marked the fourth consecutive year of the drought, and a warm 2015 spring led to early budbreak and an early flowering, just in time for some late season rain and wind, which dramatically reduced the yields due to poor fruit-set. A warm summer yielded smaller berries and fewer clusters but, somewhat surprisingly, much higher acidity.
