Red wine
Peter Michael Winery, Les Pavots 2006
This is a fantastic blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. An opaque garnet headed towards ruby in hue, this wine smells of cedar, cherry, plum and dried herbs as age begins to release a spice box of complexity. Muscular, fine-grained tannins suavely wrap around an alluring core of black cherry, cedar and dried herbs. The tannins put on the squeeze through the finish, but zippy acidity keeps the fruit fresh and lively, promising perhaps another decade of ageing potential. Poised, smooth and delicious, with little sign of its prodigious alcohol. Cold, wet and stormy weather got this vintage off to a rocky start, but summer proved warm and generous, with one heatwave in July that helped move things along. Harvest was smooth and untroubled.
