French journalist and photographer Thierry Gaudillère is the winner of Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year 2024 for his aerial shot (see full image below) of a Pinot Noir harvest in Volnay, Burgundy. He cleverly captures the shadows of vineyard workers on a dust track as the sun shines on the key players involved in the harvest.
This is the second year the French photographer has won the coveted prize. Last year, he claimed the title with an image of a woman resting in a fermentation tank after emptying it.
This year’s winners were announced by acclaimed chef and broadcaster Andi Oliver in an awards ceremony that saw stars of the food and arts world gather at the Mall Galleries, London, on 4 June. The images were judged under three categories all related to the world of wine: People, Produce and Places.
Gaudillère won first place in the Places category and was announced as the overall winner, while fellow French photographer Jonathan Thevenet claimed first prize in the People category with Les Liens du Vin, an image captured at the Aegerter estate in Burgundy. In a triple win for the French, Guenhaël Kessler was awarded first place for his entry in the Produce category entitled In the Tank During Alcoholic Fermentation, an almost abstract close-up of the vivid colours of fermentation.
‘The quality of the images overall was outstanding and I love the way the three category winners evoke the conviviality and excitement of grape picking and the sheer beauty and colour of winemaking,’ said Joanna Simon, wine writer and member of the judging panel for Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year
As in previous years, the judging panel was chaired by renowned food photographer David Loftus, who was joined by a diverse group of professionals, including fellow photographers, as well as magazine editors, creative directors, film directors, food retailers and chefs.
An exhibition of all the finalist images and films will premiere at the Mall Galleries, London. The free-to-enter exhibition runs from 5-9 June. The exhibition forms part of the first-ever Plate! St James’s, a new festival across the historic area of St James’s in London that celebrates food, drink and photography from 5-23 June.
