While many a wild idea has been concocted among university friends after one too many drinks, most students lack the gumption (and means) to turn their dreams into reality. But for childhood pals Rob Wallis and Sam Hunt, their big idea while house-sharing at York University turned out to be drinks industry dynamite.
Spotting a gap in the market for a high-end bottled cocktail brand people could enjoy fresh from the fridge, they blew their student loans on experimenting with ingredients and jacked in their day jobs soon after graduating. The pair launched cocktail brand Moth (meaning ‘mix of total happiness’) in February 2021, which is now Britain’s fastest-growing premium ‘ready to drink’ brand.
In episode 98 of The Drinking Hour, host David Kermode chats to Wallis and Hunt about how they turned their idea into a reality, the challenges and silver linings of launching during lockdown, making the move from bottles to cans and consequently winning a Waitrose listing – plus, the eight canned cocktails that make up the Moth range.
