In episode 258 of The Drinking Hour, Master of Wine John Hoskins MW, who led the latest IWSC Global Judging of wine in China, joins host David Kermode to discuss the terroir, grape varieties and winemaking styles currently driving Chinese wine.

The podcast begins with a chat about the country’s most famous winemaking region, Ningxia, and what has made it such a success. The episode then moves on to Cabernet Sauvignon, China’s most planted grape variety, and the way styles are shifting as winemaking approaches diversify and evolve. The promise of two more unusual grape varieties that are gaining traction in China is then touched on, before Hoskins and Kermode look at emerging Chinese winemaking innovations and what the future holds for the country’s wines.
