The stunning landscape of Weingut Kastanienbaum, one of the best wineries in Switzerland for tours and tastings
The lakeside estate, Weingut Kastanienbaum, is abuzz with new energy as the young winemakers Kevin Studer and Denis Koch bring new ideas to the winery

A growing number of wineries in Switzerland now open their doors to curious wine lovers, offering tastings, cellar visits and the occasional long-table lunch overlooking ancient Alpine castles. It’s therefore safe to say that wine tourism in the country is having a moment. But it’s still yet to match the efficiency of the national rail system. Some places remain… elusive. These are small, often family-run operations, and welcoming guests isn’t always the top priority. You might see ‘open’ online, knock on the cellar door and be met with nothing but a cat and a locked gate.

The trick? Plan ahead, make an appointment, learn a few pleasantries in the local language and lower your expectations — until the wine starts pouring. Swiss hospitality will kick in. Just not always on your schedule.

Whether it’s a splash of Chasselas straight from the barrel or rosé at a winemaker’s sunset barbecue, there’s something to enjoy in every region. Vaud leads the pack with its experiences and expanding wine tourism network, but other regions are catching up fast – particularly Graubünden and Valais, where you can taste Provins’s finest reserves in mountain caverns – or feast on a vintner’s barbecue at JET Wein overlooking Lake Zürich. Here we list over 20 of the best wineries and estates in Switzerland that are open to visitors.
