Sassicaia, Bolgheri Sassicaia 2018

RRP £150

What a wine to celebrate 50 years! The 2018 marks the half-century since the first commercial release of Sassicaia. The vintage was fresh and cool with rain in spring. “It wasn’t an easy vintage; keeping the vegetation under control was a challenge in spring and early summer,” says Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta. “It’s the kind of vintage we like; it represents a classic Sassicaia style, with less concentration and sugar, and more finesse.” The nose is wonderfully fresh and earthy, with violet perfume, then a deep sweet palate with incredible acidity and mouthfilling darkish fruit, sweet late ripe blackberries and an overwhelming impression of great charm. It’s not nearly ready – as you pay closer attention you see there’s a moment at mid palate where you find yourself on the edge of a hole, although you’re confident it will be filled as the fruit develops. The tannins are dusty with sweet fresh notes, and – most delightful – wafts of salinity, a hint of sea breeze to complement the sweet rhythm of the fruit and tannin. A lovely wine. Bravo.
