Ata-Rangi-Martinborough-Pinot-Noir

Ata Rangi, Pinot Noir 2003

RRP N/A in UK

The vintage in 2003 was tiny as Martinborough was hit with frost earlier in the growing season. This, for me, has an exceptionally “Martinborough” nose – something like a combination of sour cherry (even a note of Tunes sweets, for the UK reader) and savoury, herbal, leafiness. Masters uses the term “hay” which is entirely apt too. It is a truly complex, beautiful nose that’s utterly beguiling. There’s a tiny apricot-kernel note of bitterness on the finish which is almost trademark Ata Rangi, but on the palate it is truly pretty but with such a glorious, long-lived texture. Phenomenal and so, so long.
