Ata-Rangi-Martinborough-Pinot-Noir

Ata Rangi, Pinot Noir 2010

RRP N/A in UK

A great deal of clarity here. Very red-fruit and a bit of bramble with smoky notes (not reduction, I should say) even moving into some chocolate hitns. This has an intriguing palate – and always has had. According to winemaker Helen Masters, the “wine was always a bit nerdy and nervous”, and for me, it still hasn’t quite shaken that off. It feels like the palate shifts gear midway through tasting (more of a clunky 2nd to 4th jump in gear than a smooth double-declutch). Dispassionately, it’s clearly a glorious wine but I’ve never, personally, really fallen for it.
