6. Damaschito

Grifalco, Damaschito Aglianico del Vulture Superiore 2015 (Aglianico del Vulture)

RRP £34.95

Most people have heard of Aglianico, but few realise just how good and age-worthy its wines can be. To my mind, only Nebbiolo and Sangiovese make similarly long-lived, world-class reds. Aglianico also translates terroir exceptionally well, with Taurasi totally different from Aglianico del Vulture. Unfortunately, questionable producer talent, archaic practices and old cellar equipment have hampered its rise to stardom. But Grifalco’s wines showcase all Aglianico can be: richly fruity, herbal and mineral, with nuances of cherry, tobacco and flint; full-bodied, fleshy, steely and complex.
