2016 is described as a “near perfect” vintage in Napa. This is the first year winemaker Marcus Notaro added a fraction (2%) of Cabernet Franc, on the basis that it brings complexity without adding tannin. The nose is attractively open and perfumed, the palate fresh, intense, with sweet dark fruit to start with and then plump, generous damson and blueberry with some minerality. A really nice balance of tannin (ripe and soft – Notaro left the wines on the skins for longer than usual) and acidity, and good length. A generous, charming, ripe, round wine with enough acidity to carry it to a good old age.
