At the foot of the Göttweiger Berg in the southern Kremstal, close to Göttweig Abbey, sits a family estate where winemaking is something deeply personal. Three generations work closely together at Weingut Müller, the eldest still fully involved, the youngest already lending a hand. In total: twelve Müllers at the estate. People often ask who’s the boss here. Their answer? The wine. It sets the pace.
Viticulture has a long tradition in the area around the Göttweiger Berg. Since 1936, the Müller family estate in Krustetten has been run as a family winery, though the tradition of winemaking in the house dates back to 1270. Currently, the third and fourth generations run the winery together, following the principle: the secret of quality is rooted in the vineyards. From the vineyard to the cellar, from orchards to grain fields, everything is part of a natural cycle. They go one step further: for them, winemaking starts not in the vineyard but in their own vine nursery. You can’t be more rooted in wine than that.
The vineyards are located around the Göttweiger Berg in the southern Kremstal and extend up the Danube River to the Wachau. The landscape around the Göttweiger Berg offers a diverse variety of soils, from deep loess to weathered conglomerate to barren primary rock soils, and unique climatic conditions for high-quality grapes and wines full of character. The family focuses on sustainable cultivation of the vineyards, which stretch from Mautern in the Wachau to Hollenburg in the southern Kremstal. Special attention is given to careful cultivation, to bring out the best of each site and to gently bottle as much of the naturally grown goodness as possible.
What the family enjoys most about making wine is that no two days are the same. They work with nature, which constantly challenges and inspires them. The craft is deeply rooted in tradition, yet it offers endless possibilities for innovation and creativity.
What makes their wines unique is that each one tells the story of its origin. They reflect the character of the vineyards, the soil and the climate, year after year. The family’s signature is clearly present in every bottle: consistent, honest and pure. They focus on expressing the true identity of each site, without unnecessary influence, allowing nature to speak.
The entire family is involved in the business. Stefan takes care of the vineyards with passion, supported by his nephew Laurenz. Leopold is responsible for vinification, whilst his son Martin takes over responsibilities from grape receiving to processing, bottling and quality management. Martha manages the office and finances, often with help from her youngest, Therese. Diana has taken over the export business in its entirety. Verena prepares lunch daily for the family and 30-member team, bakes fresh farmhouse bread twice a month, and takes care of all homemade delicacies at the Heurigen, the wine tavern. Gertrude and Leopold senior support where they can, always ready to help. The circle closes with a great team that actively supports the family.
