DOliveiras

Madeira, a Portuguese archipelago in the Atlantic, is most famous for two things: its striking volcanic landscapes and a fortified wine named after the island itself. Out of the producers of Madeira on the island, there is perhaps none more respected than Pereira D’Oliveira. Today, the company is run by Luís D’Oliveira, fifth generation, and his nephew Filipe, sixth generation and winemaker since 2002. This year, they’ve claimed the top position in the IWSC Top 50 Producers.

Over the years, the D’Oliveira family has acquired four other wine cellars, the oldest established in 1820, inheriting rare stocks that form the backbone of their remarkable collection today. Among Madeira houses, D’Oliveira holds one of the deepest libraries of old vintages, some reaching back to the 19th century. Their practice of bottling on demand means wines often spend decades in cask before release, giving vintages extraordinary ageing time that sets them apart.

For Filipe, winemaking is intensely personal. He lives every stage of the process, from grape selection to vinification and ageing, applying knowledge passed down through generations, particularly from his father, his greatest mentor. “I treat wine as a second child,” he explains. It’s this dedication, combined with Madeira’s ideal climate and soil, that produces wines appreciated across the globe.

The house specialises in traditional varieties including Verdelho, Malvasia, Bual and Sercial, with wines that show layered complexity, nutty and dried fruit character, bright acidity and lengthy finishes. Luís D’Oliveira championed the practice of printing bottling dates on back labels, emphasising the extended cask ageing that defines their style. What they may lack in volume, they more than make up for in pedigree: few producers anywhere can claim library stocks this deep or a reputation forged over nearly two centuries of uncompromising craft.
