Founded in 1773, Weingut Aigner has been making wine in the Kremstal region for nine generations. Today, Wolfgang Aigner and his son Christian are responsible for the vineyards and the cellar, continuing a tradition that stretches back over two and a half centuries.
The winery cultivates around 16 hectares of vineyards in Krems, with loess and primary rock soils that define the character of their wines. Grüner Veltliner has always taken centre stage here, making up the majority of their plantings alongside Riesling. The estate is known for producing full-bodied Grüner Veltliners with great ageing potential, wines that show their best when mature, revealing the precision of Wolfgang and Christian’s work in the cellar. Reserves after 15 to 20 years can remain vibrant, a testament to the quality of fruit and the rational approach to winemaking passed down from Aigner Franz, Wolfgang’s father.
For the Aigners, quality begins in the vineyard. They limit yields by thinning about one third of the grapes and use integrated pest management, producing roughly 60,000 bottles annually from special vineyard sites including Obere Sandgrube and Frechau. In the cellar, the wines are vinified very rationally. They don’t follow fashion trends in winemaking, and each vintage has its own character. You can truly taste the year it was made.
Their philosophy is based on maturity, tradition and expression, combined with a deep love for nature. In their wines, you can sense the character of Wolfgang and Christian Aigner, both honest, calm men with a deep connection to the land. Their powerful Grüner Veltliners are very typical of the region: full-bodied yet light, fresh and expressive, with spiciness and powerful aromatics. These are wines that fully draw on the region’s potential and score with top quality.
