Framed by the dramatic peaks of the Franschhoek Valley, Mont Rochelle is a boutique winery and luxury estate owned by Sir Richard Branson, part of the Virgin Limited Edition collection. The winery occupies a heritage building dating back to the 1850s, once a fruit packing shed and now a fully operational cellar processing around 150 tons of grapes each season. Because the building holds National Heritage status, its structure could not be altered – leading the team to design ingenious horizontal white-wine tanks that fit beneath the original roofline. It’s a small detail that encapsulates Mont Rochelle’s philosophy: innovation guided by deep respect for history.
The estate cultivates Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, varieties that thrive in the Franschhoek Valley’s Mediterranean-like climate of dry summers and cool, wet winters. South-easterly breezes sweeping through the valley moderate temperatures and extend the ripening period, allowing fruit to mature slowly and evenly. The result is wines that balance freshness with depth – elegant reflections of place and patience.
Winemaker Michael Langenhoven brings both heritage and heart to Mont Rochelle. ‘From preparing the vineyards during the growing season to producing high-quality grapes, making the wines and eventually sharing them, every step is incredibly rewarding,’ he says. ‘Winning awards makes it even more special – and the people you meet through wine make the journey truly meaningful.’
Every Mont Rochelle wine is crafted in a hands-on, small-batch environment, where meticulous attention to detail defines each stage – from vineyard management through to bottling. The result is a collection of premium wines that embody both precision and personality, celebrating the character of the Franschhoek Valley.
