Juniper is the owner and custodian of some of Margaret River’s most prized vineyard blocks. Family owned since 1973 and under the stewardship of the Hill family from 1998, the estate now comprises three distinct sites from Karridale in the south to Metricup in the north. The philosophy is anchored in organic viticulture and a culture of innovation and collaboration in the winery, aiming to make exceptional wines that are true expressions of place and time.
Everything they make they grow, and everything they grow is certified sustainable under Australia’s SWA programme. They seek to maximise the diversity of flora and fauna within the soil and above it whilst sequestering carbon and building resilience. Juniper farms some of the oldest plantings in Margaret River. The dry-grown estate sits on prime Wilyabrup loams and ancient bedrock. Close proximity to the Indian Ocean provides near ideal growing conditions and the ability to produce full-flavoured yet balanced and layered, medium-bodied wines. The Gin Gin clone of Chardonnay and the Houghton clone of Cabernet are perfectly suited to the climate and synonymous with Margaret River’s success.
For winemaker Andrew Bretherton, what he loves most is experiencing the seasons in a unique way. “The way the season plays out links directly to the style of our wines and informs our winemaking instincts,” he explains. “It fosters a deep connection with the land, a heightened awareness of the climate patterns and a perpetual curiosity.” From early spring, he gets to experience the vines waking up and watch them grow or struggle their way through a particular year until the moment they pick the fruit. “We have the privilege of nurturing the soils and vines as well as the resulting wines based on this never-to-be-repeated season.”
The winemaking community in Margaret River is massively congenial. Experimentation, openness and sharing knowledge benefit all producers. The spectacular beauty of the region, abundance of fresh produce, beach culture and pristine air and water draw talent from around Australia and the world.
