Nestled between the Simonsberg Mountains and Klapmuts Hill, Le Bonheur Wine Estate is a WWF Conservation Champion and Fairtrade-certified estate, part of the French, family-owned AdVini Group. Established in the early 1700s by the French Huguenot De Villiers family, who fittingly named it Le Bonheur, meaning “happiness”, the estate embodies centuries of craftsmanship and character rooted in Stellenbosch’s finest terroirs. Historically, Le Bonheur was a resting place for travellers and traders, offering lush green surroundings and natural spring waters. Today, the estate retains its sense of place, timeless setting and rich heritage.
With altitudes of up to 450 metres, aspects and slopes all along Klapmuts Hill and four main soil types, Le Bonheur truly boasts a diverse selection of excellent wines. The estate has some of the oldest Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon plantings in Stellenbosch, which contribute to the depth and complexity of these wines. All grapes are hand-harvested and traditional wine methods are applied, with a strong French influence. Today, winemaker William Wilkinson and his team balance heritage with innovation, nurturing old vines, some planted in 1977, through sustainable, site-specific viticulture to capture the truest expression of place.
For William, winemaking is a continuous conversation with nature, one that teaches patience, humility and respect. “Every season unfolds differently, shaped by subtle shifts in climate and soil, and our role is to interpret those nuances with care,” he explains. “What I enjoy most is witnessing how a vineyard’s personality evolves over time and how each vintage tells a unique story.”
Le Bonheur’s wines are a celebration of terroir and restraint. The vineyards rest on weathered granite soils, between 250 and 450 metres above sea level, where a cooler microclimate allows for slow, even ripening. This yields elegant, fruit-driven wines with natural freshness, fine tannins and balanced alcohol. Whilst Bordeaux varieties form the core focus, the Chardonnay has become a quiet star, consistently praised for its depth and poise. Every vineyard is planted with intent, aligning slope, soil and sun, crafting wines that capture both the soul of Stellenbosch and the quiet happiness that defines Le Bonheur.
