DeMorgenzon

DeMorgenzon is a garden paradise on the slopes of the Stellenbosch mountains, rising from 200 to nearly 400 metres above sea level. From here, sweeping views stretch across Cape Town, Table Mountain, Cape Point, Cape Hangklip, the Hottentots Holland mountains, Helderberg and Simonsberg, with the ocean shimmering beyond. Whilst the slopes could be called ‘mountain vineyards’, the estate prefers the name ‘garden vineyards’. Each spring, wildflowers flourish between the vines, enhancing biodiversity and enriching the soils. This balance with nature, they believe, produces grapes of exceptional character and beauty. This year, DeMorgenzon has secured 26th position in the IWSC Top 50 Producers.

The people of DeMorgenzon are proud custodians of the estate. Proprietors, winemaking, viticulture, garden and hospitality teams take deep pride in their work, many having been part of the journey since the beginning. Watching the estate flourish over the years has been rewarding for all, and their passion is reflected in every bottle.

For winemaker Anthony Sanvido, what he enjoys about making wine is that it blends art, science and nature, a living expression of time and place. ‘Each vintage is unique, with its own challenges, and the resulting wine is a snapshot of soil, weather and intuition,’ he explains. ‘What makes wine special is not just the winemaking phase but also the ‘phoenix effect’ of vineyards, an eruption of life from once dormant vines.’ With each harvest, he learns and refines decisions, from picking dates to barrel choices. Winemaking sparks conversation, brings people together and captures the character of the sites where grapes are grown. ‘It is both precise and unpredictable, a balance of control and surrender. For me, winemaking is the pursuit of timeless beauty, achieved through patience and passion.’

DeMorgenzon wines are unique because each bottle reflects the character and spirit of the estate. The vineyards are home to a wide range of cultivars, including treasured Old Vine Chenin Blanc planted in 1972, which continues to yield grapes of remarkable depth and intensity. Sustainability sits at the core of the philosophy, with wildflowers growing between the vines to promote biodiversity and a balanced ecosystem.

What truly distinguishes the estate, however, is the belief in the power of music. Classical Baroque compositions play continuously in the vineyards, cellar and tasting room. The mathematical rhythm and harmony of the music resonate through the vines and into the wines, creating a natural expression of elegance and balance. Together with heritage and commitment to craft, this approach makes DeMorgenzon wines more than just an expression of terroir.
