Gérard Basset OBE, MS, MW, MBA, OIV MSc was one of the most decorated members of the wine world, and one of the few people who could claim to be both a Master of Wine and Master Sommelier. A true icon of the trade, Gérard sadly passed away in 2019 after battling cancer, but his family decided to continue his legacy.
In this week’s episode of The Drinking Hour, David Kermode sits down with Nina Basset to discuss the relationship she had with her late husband, their joint venture – Hotel du Vin – and the Gérard Basset Foundation.
Founded by Nina and Romané Basset during the pandemic, the Gérard Basset Foundation has endeavoured to support and uplift underrepresented and disadvantaged people across wine, spirits and hospitality. In only a few years the foundation has helped multiple grantees and scholars around the world to grow their careers, whilst continuing its mission to open up the sector to everyone, irrespective of background or circumstances. Throughout this episode Nina sheds light on a wonderful man who wasn’t just passionate about wine, but had a lust for life and hospitality – a spirit that continues through his family’s work today.
