Episode 248 of The Drinking Hour sees host David Kermode joined by Julian Langworthy, chief winemaker and general manager at Deep Woods Estate, to discuss winemaking in Australia’s Margaret River, including the great Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon wines from the region and the reasons why they are achieving such acclaim around the world.

The episode kicks off with a brief history of winemaking in Margaret River, including why the climate and soils make it so suited to wine production. Kermode and Langworthy discuss the region’s key grape varieties, how approaches in the winery have evolved over the years and what winning the 2025 IWSC Western Australia Producer of the Year award means for Deep Woods Estate.

Amongst other topics, Langworthy then discusses his career to date, including his mentors and winemaking philosophy, the character of recent vintages, oak usage amongst producers in Margaret River and the wine that changed his mind about Chardonnay.
