In episode 260 of The Drinking Hour, David Kermode visits the Barossa Valley to speak to Louisa Rose, winemaker and head of sustainability at Yalumba, Matthew McCullough, managing director at Langmeil, Ian Hongell, chief winemaker at Torbreck, and Henry Slattery, winemaker at Penfolds, about one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious wine regions.

In the first interview, Kermode talks terroir with Rose and the ways in which Shiraz expresses itself in the varied soils of the Barossa and Eden Valleys. His conversation with McCullough touches on the founding of winemaking in Barossa and the important role played by immigrants, before moving on to the uncovering of the world’s oldest Shiraz vineyard at Langmeil. While visiting his third guest, Ian Hongell, Kermode hears about how the nuances of Shiraz are captured in Torbreck’s wines and what the producer looks for in its whites, before a chat with Slattery looks at Penfolds’ wines and what makes Grange one of the most revered wines in the world.
