Dr Laura Catena may have trained and practised as a paediatrician but her father, Nicolas, never gave up on the idea that she would eventually become as passionate and involved with wine as he is. Business trips together to France, on which Laura would act as his translator, nurtured her interest in wine and years later, she is now managing director at Catena Zapata.

In episode 113 of The Drinking Hour, host David Kermode talks to Laura about her path to running the winery, her pioneering father and the importance of science and sustainability in the vineyard. She discusses the influence of altitude and old vines on the wines, planting Pinot Noir for the future and working with employees to provide them with the amenities they need to prosper. She also reveals why the empanadas David ate on a recent visit to the estate were so good.
