In episode 213 of The Drinking Hour podcast, David Kermode sits down with Andrew Caillard MW to discuss his three-volume tome, The Australian Ark and Caillard’s connection to Australian wine.

Throughout the episode, Kermode and Caillard explore the many stories and themes covered in The Australian Ark. Charting the history of Australian wine, the book delves into the lives and histories of the country’s fine-wine pioneers and the challenges they’ve faced in elevating the status of wine Down Under. As the seventh largest export in Australia, Caillard explains how winemaking is inextricably linked to Australian history and ambitions.

Caillard was awarded the 2025 Wine Communicator of The Year by the IWSC for his profound impact on Australian wine communication and education. Caillard explains how his journey into wine began – from heading to Australia on a cargo ship, to founding Langton’s Fine Wine Auctions in 1989. Over the years, he has received many accolades, including the Madame Lilly Bollinger Medal for excellence in wine tasting and the 2011 Australian Wine Communicator of the Year award.
