Alvarinho, the Portuguese name for Albariño, is often a little cheaper than its Spanish counterpart and this IWSC silver medallist, from the coastal Vinho Verde region, is a great example. The fresh, salty sea-breeze nose leads into a complex feast of peach, apricot and pear with a wonderful herbal undertow. There’s plenty of concentration and a crisp, saline finish. Pair this with pan-friend plaice in a caper butter.
