A savoury nose with notes of tapenade. It’s very complex (Cask 23 always aims to marry the darker, dustier, cocoa-and-spice fruit of SLV and the red, perfumed fruit of Fay) with good balance of flavours: real meatiness and savouriness, and such a young wine for a 20-year-old. The tannins, brisk acidity and bright dark fruit give it crunch and punch. Fresh, youthful, intense. This will last for many years yet – it’s ready now if you like your fruit and your tannins fresh (has it found its sweet spot yet?) Winemaker Marcus Notaro aims for this style and potential in his wines: “I love ageability”.
