Light and fresh at first though tannins assert themselves after moments, with a powerful grip, tight and defined, not seen on the earlier vintages. Such an interesting vintage – the earliest for decades in Napa, but late at Promontory due the coolness brought by frequent fogs, and a lot of wind which thickened the skins. Will Harlan says this is the first year they had to “dial back on the extraction”. The wine is all texture at the moment, with a wet-stone freshness and hints of spice, and most satisfying length on the palate. Beautifully integrated.
