A blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano, the Gran Reserva 2016 from Viña Arana has been given kid-glove treatment; the grapes were hand harvested and the wine was aged for three years in American oak barrels hand-crafted at the winery, before being racked from barrel by candlelight. This careful, elevated approach to winemaking has resulted in a sophisticated and polished wine that epitomises the traditional style of Gran Reserva Rioja. The nose has alluring notes of soft red fruits and leather that combine with hints of toasted vanilla and savoury clove. A concentrated, rich and full-bodied mid palate is supported by silky, fine-grained tannins and a lifted freshness that carries lingering notes of wild strawberries and judiciously toasted oak. Only the fourth release of this particular Gran Reserva, the 2016 vintage is one to savour and enjoy for many years to come.
