Château Margaux, Margaux 2019
RRP £507
This wine nicely the 100% new oak nicely, with deep violet and dainty white floral aromas. The bright, silky attack conveys cassis, blackberry and peony, delivered via velvety tannin: great finesse and sumptuousness. While almost matching the 2018 palate density, the 2019 shows greater freshness, given its lower pH (3.62). Tannin is not as high as in 2018, but estate director Philippe Bascaules (with whom the wine was tasted) prefers the complexity and balance in 2019, as do I. This superb wine combines subtle Pauillac power with Margaux elegance.
