The first Velier release is a 10-year-old rum bottled in 2016 and aged in ex-bourbon casks for three years before being filled into ex-Cognac for a further seven. Here, the pot-still component is more to the fore (showing wet chamois leather and decaying pineapple), balanced by a bright citric lift and a delicate dried rose petal before deepening to concentrated black fruits and hot orchid house. Despite the weight, the delivery is gentle, with layered fruits, liquorice and some oils from the pot-still element, alongside clove and pulp/tropical fruit. This has real finesse.
