Boumpa at the 2025 UK Sommelier of the Year final

In this week’s episode of The Drinking Hour, David Kermode is joined by UK Sommelier of the Year 2025 winner, Maria Boumpa. Director of wine at the two Michelin starred Da Terra, Boumpa entered the industry almost by chance in 2015 whilst working in hospitality alongside her university studies. Falling in love with service (and wine), the sommelier eventually found herself in London where she continued to pursue her thirst for knowledge.

Kermode and Boumpa discussed the pressure that comes with taking part in the UK Sommelier of the Year competition. From the blind tasting to the infamous champagne pour, Boumpa delves into what exactly was going on in her head at the time, and the preparation she did beforehand.

As one of two women in the final, five women in the top ten, and only a handful of women that applied for the competition, Boumpa discusses the undeniable talent of women in hospitality, albeit only making up a small chunk of the trade.

Lastly, the award-winning sommelier delves into the wines that we should all have on our radar. From praising the unique qualities of Greek indigenous varieties, to shouting out some of the finest producers in England, Boumpa’s favourite bottles are a reflection of both her heritage and the place she now calls home.
