If you’ve enjoyed a wine from the Languedoc there is a large chance it may have been produced by Jean-Claude Mas. Producing 25 million bottles of wine a year, Paul Mas are known for own-brand supermarket wine, as well as creating high quality bottles under their own name. Recently the estate’s Cote Mas L’Espirit de Midi 2023 even received an IWSC Gold medal, showing their range as both a producer of supermarket and premium wines.
In this episode Mas talks to Kermode about his upbringing, coming from a long line of grape growers Mas undid tradition by making the switch to winemaking, and established Paul Mas just 25 years ago. Today Paul Mas continues to innovate, which Mas touches on in detail, as well as mentioning their ‘new world’ approach to old world winemaking, the estate’s respect for the consumer, and what it is that categorises the everyday British drinker.
