Series 18 features conversations with a number of drinks professionals who all offer their own fresh perspectives

In this week’s episode of The Drinking Hour podcast, David Kermode reflects on highlights from the most recent series with a range of guests from across the world of wine and spirits.

To kick off series 18, Kermode met with GH Mumm’s new cellar master Yann Munier, who less than a year into the job, revealed the challenges and honour of taking on such a prestigious role.

In the last few months, many writers, experts and academics have released new publications that each provide a new perspective on the world of wine. Kermode chats with Sunny Hodge, owner of Diogenes the Dog, to discuss his much-discussed book, The Cynic’s Guide to Wine, which challenges many of the commonly held beliefs about wine, including a controversial take on the relevance of terroir. In episode 215, Elaine Chukan Brown speaks about their new book, The Wines of California, which provides fresh insights into the region, including the indigenous population’s impact on California’s winemaking. Lastly, Andrew Caillard MW’s three-volume tome, The Australian Ark, goes under the microscope, as he reflects on his relationship with Australia and the fascinating centuries-old history of the country’s winemaking.

Kermode meets with Ian Hongell, chief winemaker of Torbreck, to uncover what makes Barossa so special and discuss the white Northern Rhône varieties that Hongell has on his radar. In episode 212, Kermode sits down with Alex Watson of Renais Gin, to discuss how the winemaking of Chablis has influenced the flavour profile of his exciting new spirit.

All of this and more is explored in-depth in the most recent series. Listen to the latest episode now to enjoy Kermode’s highlights.
