The Drinking Hour podcast: rum with Ian Burrell

On Episode 83 of The Drinking Hour podcast, global rum ambassador Ian Burrell joins David Kermode to discuss the history of the spirit and its role in cocktail culture

Words by Club Oenologique Editors

Rum’s versatility and range of styles has long made it a bartender essential, and its inclusion in some of the world’s most well-known cocktails (a Mojito, Daiquiri, Mai Tai or Piña Colada) means it’s a firm favourite with drinkers, too. The spirit is also steeped in history, with the creation of the first rums from the Caribbean (the drink’s most well-known region for production) taking place on the sugarcane plantations there in the 17th century.

Renowned rum expert and global ambassador Ian Burrell joins host David Kermode on this week’s episode of The Drinking Hour podcast to explore the beginnings of the sugarcane-based spirit, and its place in cocktail culture today. Burrell explains what makes a truly brilliant rum, and why he decided to create his own label, Equiano.
