Named ‘liquor of the gods’ by Victor Hugo and rumoured favourite of Napoleon, Cognac has its fair share of famous fans. Understandably so, as the spirit goes through quite the process to end up at its tawny, complex end product.
In this week’s instalment of The Drinking Hour podcast, David Kermode is joined by Club Oenologique columnist and spirits expert Joel Harrison to dig into what makes Cognac so special, from terroir to blending, barrels and beyond.
Harrison and Kermode discuss what makes cognac, well, cognac, the little-known facts of the Cognac region (it’s Frances’s second largest grape growing region, second only to Languedoc) and why Ugni Blanc, the spirit’s base wine, is so crucial in Cognac’s production and intense final tasting notes.
