In this week’s episode of The Drinking Hour, David Kermode is joined by David Moulton of Margaret River’s Cape Mentelle.

Founded by pioneer David Hohnen (who went on to Cloudy Bay) and his brothers Mark and Giles in 1970, Cape Mentelle is one of the ‘founding five’ wineries of a now cult region of winemaking. Today, winemaker Daivd Moulton is at the helm and here he discusses Cape Mentelle’s history, from the cultivation of its first vines to the history of Margaret River itself – a region that continues to grow in recognition.

Chatting in depth about the region, Kermode and Moulton talk Dr John Gladstone, who identified Margaret River as a region for winemaking, and the impact he had on Cape Mentelle, as well as the topography that makes Margaret River so distinct. From ocean breezes to ancient soils, Moulton discusses how the winemaking region is the perfect place for Chardonnay.

Lastly, Kermode and Moulton touch on the impact of climate change on Cape Mentelle and the steps the winery is taking to become more sustainable.
