Red wine
CVNE, Contino Vina del Olivo 2016
RRP £65.90
A very hot year, but it is the proximity of the river rather than the shade of the eponymous 700 year-old olive tree which made all the difference, for this, the wine which I always love to compare with Imperial Gran Reserva, because one of them will usually be my favourite in the entire range. Olivo is always released relatively young, and its 17 months in oak, whilst a lengthy sojourn in absolute terms, actually reminds us that this is made in a slightly different style to the Gran Reservas. Fruit to the fore, freshness bolstered by the 10% of Graciano and supple tannic support; always plenty of energy and generosity. One of the great names.
